Saying by tongue is a work of great responsibility

Surah Baniii ‘Israaa-‘iil (The Children of Israel) – 17

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

36.  (O man), follow not that whereof thou hast no knowledge. Lo! the hearing and the sight and the heart – of each of these it will be asked. 36.  Wa  laa  taqfu  maa  laysa  laka  bihii  ‘ilm.  ‘Innas-sam-‘a  wal-basara  wal-fu-‘aada  kullu  ‘ulaaa-‘ika  kaana  ‘anhu  mas-‘uulaa.

Commentary

Laa  taqfu – (Follow not!), it is a negative sentence from the word quf-wun, which means “to follow”. From the same; a word qufaa’ has been derived which means “the back of the neck”.

Fu-‘aada – (the heart), it aims “sense and intelligence, work of which is to bring out correct results from the available information”.

It is known from this verse that “that is the correct knowledge which is confirmed by the common sense and after that; one has faith in it. If any person regards a matter as true before confirmation by the common sense, and either he spoke about it or acted upon it, then it will be asked from him that “why did you hastened without confirmation?” And then he will be punished certainly because of it; either in the world or in the Hereafter or in the both places. Saying something by tongue is a work of great responsibility. For this, it is necessary that the ears heard correctly, eyes saw exactly and then the mind drew sound result from the heard and seen matter, and at the last; common sense of the mankind confirmed that it was the correct result, then the heart was satisfied that it was able to be spoken or acted upon it unhesitatingly.

Here, it has been caused to understand the mankind that he should think before speaking or going forth that whether these entire powers (hearing, seeing, mental, physical and intellectual etc.) have performed their work properly or otherwise? If there is any error in hearing, understanding or looking, or the sense has confirmed erroneously, or the heart has confirmed to do or say something without confirmation of the wisdom, then the human being will be entangled in the difficulties of the world and the Hereafter. And it will be asked from him about every power out of them.

Commentary

It is commanded: Do never consume the wealth of orphans in your personal requirements. However with the intention to save it or making more profitable and useful, you can use it. In this matter you should keep in view the welfare of the orphans only. And till the time they do not become adult, able to save it themselves and capable to earn profit from it, you should continue saving and looking after their wealth. And when they become young, their physical and mental strength begin to work suitably, then you should hand over their wealth and property to them because that was under your possession as a trust.

After that it is commanded: You should keep the covenant on the condition that it is not against the religious law. You will be asked about it and if you broke it; you will be punished. When you measure for giving in exchange, you should bear in mind and weigh with a right balance without measuring excess or reduced. Fill the measure fairly at the time of weighing for giving and taking. It is better for you and consequently it will be useful and advantageous for all.
