Commentary

Story of Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) was asked because the Jews exited them for it. Messenger of Allah Almighty, Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) caused to hear this story with so much eloquence and in a good language that the hearers were astonished. Moreover, some such matters were also explained which were even neither known to the Jews and nor those did exist in their Holy Book.

It is commanded: You (O Muhammad!) were not aware of these all circumstances in respect of the life of Joseph (peace be upon him). We manifested them upon you by means of inspiration from the Unseen Screen. When his (Joseph’s) brothers were thinking for a plan against him (peace be upon him) and were desirous to behave deceitfully, at that time, You were not present there. You told the story which We (God Almighty) taught You (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Then, what is their hesitation in having belief in this Word (Qur’aan) revealed by Us? It is also a token of Messenger-hood that You have been causing them to hear unhesitatingly correct historical incidents, whereas You are Uneducated. Secondly, You do not ask them any fee for these information.

Commentary

Although Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) suffered in the beginning, but the end was good. It has been mentioned in the Explanations (Tafaasiir) that His brothers placed Him in the depth of the pit at the age of seventeen years. He (peace be upon him) remained away from His father for forty years. When Allah Almighty joined Him to His Father, Jacob (peace be upon him), then they all lived collectively in Egypt for twenty four years happily. After that, their Father Jacob (peace be upon him) departed.

After the death of His Father, Joseph (peace be upon them) enjoyed worldly life for twenty three years, then He (peace be upon him) thanked his Lord (God Almighty) and supplicated that: O my Lord! You have given me sovereignty in the world and taught me knowledge of the interpretation of the dreams. You bestowed me ability of understanding the matters correctly. Your Divine Power is very extensive. You created the heavens and the earth and supported them. You protected me in my all afflictions. You are also a Protecting Guardian of mine at both places (in the world and after death in the Hereafter). Beautify my futurity also as You beautified my life of this world. Make me to die as a Muslim, and join me to the people who are righteous.

The righteous servants of Allah Almighty do not forget their Creator during engagement in the worldly works. They bear in mind that actual life will begin after death. Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) used to pray also the same i.e. “Beautify our Hereafter and join us to the righteous on the Day of Resurrection”.

Commentary

When parents and all brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) fell down before him prostrate and thanked him in accordance with the tradition of those days, then Joseph (peace be upon him) said: With the Grace of God Almighty, it is the interpretation of my that dream which I was shown during my child-hood and which has been made true by Him. It was His kindness on me during every difficulty. At first He took me out of the prison with good name, then He arranged to bring all of you here from the desert and see me, otherwise Satan had made strict strife among me and my brethren. Verily, the Knowledge of Allah Almighty has surrounded everything and He is well Aware of managing the every work properly.

Commentary

Sujjadan – (the persons who fell down prostrate), this word is plural of saajid, which is the subject (a doer), came out from sa-ja-da. Sajdah means “to put one’s forehead on the ground”.

It was a custom of being thankful to someone during those days that one was required to fall down prostrate before him. The aim from it was an announcement of his respect and reverence. Even it had not been forbidden by the Religious Law, because object of this prostration was NOT “to adore”. The people used to bow before someone for showing their thankfulness; so much that their foreheads used to touch the land.

The Religious Law of the last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) rejected this practice and it was specified only for the worship of Allah Almighty. Islam taught the mankind that the people should not fall down prostrate before any other save Allah Almighty for thanking, but they should choose other ways of respect among one another. Prostration has been specified for adoration of Allah Almighty and being thankful to Him only, so that a difference between the respect of The Real Benefactor (God Almighty) and others may be made.

When Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) arrived near Egypt along with his entire tribe, Joseph (peace be upon him) received them, placed his parents on the dais equal himself and said: Come into Egypt safe and satisfied, if Allah will. For being thankful to Joseph (peace be upon him), they all bowed down before him so much that their foreheads touched the ground.

I have no complaint against you

Quran Chapter 12  96 to 98 (Pt-13, Stg-3) (L-1542) – درس قرآن

I have no complaint against you

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) – 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

Brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) misbehaved with him and Binyamin. They both were younger than all other brothers. But Allah Almighty bestowed honour to Joseph (peace be upon him), his brothers stood before him being abashed and ashamed. In these verses, way of talking with elders has been taught. The brothers were repentant and desirous that they should ask forgiveness from Joseph for themselves. But Joseph (peace be upon him) regarded them because they were elders. Only these words came out by their tongue “Allah has created you fortunate and we were sinful without any doubt”. But Joseph (peace be upon him) did not provide them chance of saying more and said immediately, “Have no fear this day! May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy”.

From this discussion, it appears that Joseph (peace be upon him) was well-acquainted with business. He (peace be upon him) regarded His brothers in two forms:

  1. He (peace be upon him) did not provide them opportunity to say “Forgive our error”, because in it, there was a lightness of them.
  2. Even He (peace be upon him) did not say to them “I forgave you”, because saying this by a younger; does not suit.

We can learn from it that the younger should say at once “I have no complaint against you”, as soon as he feels that the elder is abashed and repentant due to his error in any matter.

After that, when the sons reached their father with good news, they declared before him (peace be upon him) that they were repentant, but they could not say by their tongue “Forgive our error”, because it was not an ordinary mistake. They requested only this “O our father! Ask forgiveness of our sins for us, for lo! We were sinful”. When Jacob (peace be upon him) felt their repentance, He consoled them and said: I shall ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Lo! He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

There is an indication in this reply of Jacob (peace be upon him), “Your sin is so much great that it can be forgiven by Allah Almighty only”, and a point of reproof exists also in this signal; which can be done by the elder to his younger. It has been shown from the replies of Jacob and Joseph (peace be upon them) that “We forgave you”. But in their ways of talking, those manners were contemplated which are regard-able among the elders and the youngers.

Commentary

These people had not reached so far, that wave of pleasure ran over in the heart of Jacob (peace be upon him) spontaneously. The person, who brought the glad tidings, laid the shirt of Joseph on His eyes. As soon as he laid the shirt on His face, He became a seer once again. He (peace be upon him) thanked God Almighty and reminded to His sons: In the same manner; the works are completed by the Mercy of Allah Almighty. Did I not say you that you can never think about those matters which have been coming in my heart? They said: We are sinful. Please ask forgiveness of our sins. He {Jacob (peace be upon him)} said: All right! I shall ask forgiveness for you from my Lord. He is the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful.

95.  Qaaluu  tAllaahi  ‘innaka  lafii  zalaa-likal-qadiim.

(Part One-Fourth)

Commentary

Tufanni-duun – (you call me dotard), this word is from taf-niid, which has been derived from fanada. Fanada means “weakness of senses”, taf-niid means “to say someone insensible”. It aims: If you do not call me a person whose intellect is impaired by age, an imbecile or a driveller, then you should believe in it that I smell the scent of Joseph.

When the caravan moved from Egypt, Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) said: I smell the scent of Joseph (peace be upon him). Those, who were hearing; were surprised, because they did not observe any sign about it. Before this, Jacob (peace be upon him) could not know about Joseph (peace be upon him), because it was not Will of Allah Almighty that the Father should know about His son (peace be upon them). He desired to keep Jacob (peace be upon him) under trial for some time, so that he (peace be upon him) should experience shocks of his son’s removal from his sight but along with it, he should not be hopeless from the Mercy of Allah Almighty, and he should be upgraded.

It seems from this verse that Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) are also unable to know anything till the time; Allah Almighty does not cause to know them, and there is no cure without causes in this world. Moreover, when Allah Almighty desires, and a suitable time of anything’s happening comes, then Allah Almighty informs about the occurrence in advance to someone at sometimes by His Divine Power, or reveals against the rules; the matter of good news, so that the people may know that “This is a chosen servant of Allah Almighty”.

Commentary

Qamiisun – (shirt),

About the shirt of Joseph (peace be upon him), the Commentators have written abundant, but in Holy Qur’aan, there is mention of a word “Qamiis” (shirt) only. It is obvious that; such shirt would be that; which was in His (peace be upon him) common use. As Allah Almighty informed to Joseph and He knew that by laying His shirt on the face of His Father {Jacob (peace be upon them)}, His vision will come back. Actual cure is in the Hand of Allah Almighty. According to His Will, apparently, He can fix anything as a cause of healing. The actual Healer is He only, so the shirt of Joseph became means for this purpose. In this regard, it is a miracle of Joseph (peace be upon him).

At first, He consoled to His brothers, then said to them: Go back unto our Father with my shirt, lay it on His {Jacob’s (peace be upon them)} face. By the Command of God Almighty, sight of Him will become accurate. After that, all of you, including Father and entire other members of our folk should come here (in Egypt) and dwell here.

Allah Almighty has fixed a time for every work. Some works are completed quickly; but some works take time. Besides other expediencies, Allah Almighty desires to test His chosen servants in the works; which take time in completion, so that they may deserve better rewards by having patience; and achieve higher ranks.

Prophet Jacob (peace be upon him) exists in Syria and Joseph (peace be upon them) in Egypt. Caravans have been moving between Syria and Egypt, but neither the people of Syria know about their close relative in Egypt and nor the Egyptian {Joseph (peace be upon him)} knows about His Father and brothers living in Syria.

92.  Qaala  laa  tas-riiba  ‘alay-kumul-yawm.  Yagfi-rUllaahu  lakum,  wa  Huwa  ‘Arhamur-raahimiin.

Commentary

‘Aa-sara – (preferred), it is a past tense from the word ‘iisaar, which has been derived from ‘asara. ‘Asara means “a badge, sign, token”. It aims “to signify someone by a token of own likeness, to prefer, to choose, to adopt”.

Tas-riiba – (reproof, reprimand), origin of this word is saraba, which means “to accuse, to defame, to speak ill of, to reproach”.

Brothers of Joseph (peace be upon them) were not able to say something to Him, and they bowed their heads before Joseph (peace be upon them) being ashamed, they accepted that they were blameworthy at fault and sinful. They swore and announced of their faith that Allah Almighty preferred him from them and made him rich with His rewards and dignities.

Joseph (peace be upon them) said: What was to happen, has happened. You should not fear now. Whatsoever was committed by you, that happened either due to your ignorance or on the ground of any powerful passion or complaint. My heart is clear from your side. I give you the same respect, which is required to be for elder brothers. Today, you will not be asked about previous matters. May Allah Almighty forgive you. He is the Most Merciful. There is none who may show mercy equal to Him.

Being impressive from the distress of brothers, Joseph (peace be upon them) did not say to them clearly that, “I forgive you”, because the little do not use to say to their elders so, but by saying that, “Have no fear this day!” He (peace be upon them) regarded and showed His politeness before them.

Commentary

Patience, endurance and forbearance as of Joseph (peace be upon him) is a very difficult matter. Even then, when His brothers arrived at Egypt and met with Joseph (peace be upon him) in distressed condition, and they caused to hear Him about their poverty and insolvency, He (peace be upon him) began to shed a flood of tears and asked only this by His tongue, “Do you remember that how did you behave with Joseph and His brother being the ignorant and the unintelligent?”

As soon as they heard these words of sympathy from the ruler of Egypt {Joseph (peace be upon him)}, their organs of perception began to work fully, then they observed Him minutely and began to say: Is it indeed you who is Joseph? Joseph (peace be upon him) replied them immediately: Yes! I am Joseph and this is my brother Binyamin. Allah Almighty has shown us His great favor and bestowed us this dignity. It is Mercy and Kindness of Him only that He preserved us on the Path of God-fearing and gave us spirit of patience during calamities. Those good works which were performed by us and which acts of kindness appeared through us for the welfare of people; were only by His favor. Allah Almighty is very Merciful and Kind. He does not waste the virtues of those who do good and gives them full reward.

Joseph (peace be upon him) did not use invectives and reproaches for His brothers due to their misbehavior and maltreatment.
